harvester ants texas A Special Mouse - Wichita Falls Reptile Rescue

This is "Special Mouse". He was born in Oct 2011 here at the rescue. His mother was orphaned with several siblings in Dec 2009, when I ran their mother out of the house, and inadvertently separated her from her babies. I later found the babies stumbling about in search of her.

I raised his mother and her siblings from tiny fuzzy babies that Christmas, barely having had their eyes open at the time. I called them the "Meeces Peeces", or my Christmas Mice. His mother, Socks, was very friendly. Her brothers were released, but I frequently brought Socks with me to educational presentations to show how cute and personable our native mice can be. She died last year, when she was just over 2 years old.

Special Mouse had many siblings, but it was recognized early on that he had neurological difficulties. His siblings were released after they had been raised, but he stayed with me, as I believed he would not have survived the wild very long with his handicap. I'm not quite so sure though. He has thrived here with virtually no assistance from me. He grooms himself, knows how to build a little nest out of the hay, and he has no trouble eating the food I provide. At clean out time, he has proven to be even harder to catch than a normal mouse.
